The CSU School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers two undergraduate degrees in four areas, two graduate degrees, and two post-baccalaureate programs in such disciplines as composition, education, and performance. Many of our graduates become leaders in their chosen fields.
Elsewhere in the schedule, music aficionados can partake in the CSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony and members of the CSU Faculty Jazz Ensemble in concert; the CSU Chorale and University Chorus, and the Cleveland Contemporary Players’ Artist in Residence Series which will deliver a handful of world-premiere works!
Off-campus, the Cleveland State University Jazz Combo Showcase will livestream a jazz-filled evening of original arrangements and standards in April at the Bop Stop Music Settlement, under the direction of Joe Miller and Alfredo Guerrieri.
And at Historic St. Peter Catholic Church (E. 17th and Superior Ave., Cleveland) the CSU Chorale and University Chorus will deliver a concert that winds up the season. Brian Bailey will conduct.
All events are located at the Cleveland State University Music and Communication Building, 2001 Euclid Ave., unless otherwise noted. For more information, visit the School of Music calendar here.
“The art forms of theatre and dance are intimately tied to people interacting with each other through voice, movement and touch,” said Holly Holsinger, chair of the theatre and dance department. “Active hands-on learning alongside professionals in the field will be food for the souls of all involved—the students and teachers are starved for this ability to connect and be present in the space together.”
As classes started on August 23, the CSU School of Film and Media Arts students resuming film production activities in-person and at a larger scale after the pandemic required smaller crews and outdoor settings. “Our student filmmakers are looking forward to working on more complex film productions with larger crews and utilizing the expanded studio spaces at the School of Film & Arts,” commented Cigdem Slankard, interim director of the school.
This fall’s Student Film Festival will be hosted in the new state-of-the art screening room located on the sixth floor of the Idea Center at Playhouse Square.
The School of Music calendar includes student and guest performances, recitals and concerts. While precautions such as singing in masks and instrument bell covers are still necessary, the school looks forward to students offering a full schedule of music events.
The public is invited to enjoy student productions and concerts throughout the fall semester. Most events are free to attend. To review the fall calendar of arts events, visit https://class.csuohio.edu/artscalendar/artscalendar and mark your calendars.

“Jazz music has provided an avenue for an ongoing conversation about race and ethnicity that Jewish musicians have contributed to and gained inspiration from,” Hersch adds. “By better understanding how Jews have used jazz we can gain more knowledge about the evolution of the Jewish experience in America and the ways music can serve as a vehicle for ethnic dialogue.”
The book is part of Routledge Press’ Transnational Studies in Jazz series and can be purchased online at https://www.amazon.com/Jews-Jazz-Improvising-Charles-Hersch/dp/1138195790. In addition, Hersch will be doing a book reading and signing at 7 p.m., Monday, December 12 at the Beachwood Public Library, 25501 Shaker Blvd, Cleveland, OH.
